âThis isâ¦unexpected,â Ainsley said, as she ran her finger over the spines of several DVDs in the brothersâ impressive movie collection. There were thousands of choices taking up an entire wall in the second-floor media room, which also had a two-tiered floor, six black leather couches, and a gigantic movie screen flanked by a legit red velvet curtain. Ainsley guessed that the electronics system cost more than her car.
âUnexpected how?â Callum asked.
Ainsley glanced over at Alex, who was standing alone in the corner by the door. She wished heâd come join her, but he crossed his thick arms and showed no indication of moving.
The others were several paces away from her and Callum, in the midst of a low-key argument over whether to first play a romance, a comedy, or âsomething to really get her blood pumping.â
Ainsley wasnât frightened by the insinuation of the comment. She could feel Alexâs eyes on the situation, assessing and vigilant. And she was becoming increasingly comfortable with Callum, too. In fact, she knew deep down that even Knoxâthe scariest looking oneâwould never hurt her.
She was, just as Alex had suggested, precious to them.
âI only mean that I wouldâve never guessed youâd have something so modern in such an old house.â
She pulled one of the DVDs off the shelf and turned it around to read the back cover. She hadnât noticed any obvious porn yet, but it had to be in here somewhere; this place was like some kind of eighteenth-century vampireâNo. Baâvonn-sheeâfrat house.
But even without the obvious Debbie Does Dallas or Deep Throat, the majority of titles were provocative with covers of women bursting out of their clothes while running from exploding buildings, or lounging on race cars. She gave up on selecting a movie, and slid it back on the shelf.
As she turned, Alexâs eyes locked with hers. He hadnât moved from his spot in the corner, and he still didnât speak or come any closer. Welcome back, Mr. Hyde.
Irritated, Ainsley dropped onto one of the luxurious leather couches in the front row.
âItâs important to be comfortable when we have down time,â Callum explained as he moved an overflowing basket of remote controls and joy sticks from the floor to a shelf.
âWhatâs your up time?â she asked. âI havenât seen any of you at Thorn Enterprises. Do you all have jobs?â
Callumâs eyes darted to his brothers, who were still arguing over the best movie selection, and a tendon in his jaw stretched tight. âRory is the only one who doesnât work right now.â
For a second, Ainsleyâd forgotten about him. âI can imagine why.â
Callum gave her a grim nod. âI teach history at the university. Finn tends bar. Knox is an artist. He designs custom artwork for collector cars and bikes.â
Sheâd noticed Knoxâs paint-stained fingers before. He looked up just as she glanced over at him, and he winked one crystal blue eye.
Ainsleyâs face flushed and she quickly looked away. âAnd Alastair?â
âDuring the summer heâs usually a backpacking and canoeing guide. We werenât sure
